On February 21, 2015, 15 members from our chapter braved the Boston snow to attend Boston University’s annual PR Advanced Regional Conference.
At Regional Conference this year, we started off the morning with a great keynote address from Graham Kahr, former Social Commerce Product Manager of Zappo's. Following his keynote address, everyone broke off into two different breakout sessions. The sessions ranged from Innovative and Engaging Campaigns to Content Creation and Marketing. While all the sessions were amazing and gave PRSSA members the opportunity to learn more about PR and marketing, the standout session of the day was Social Fandom and Engagement.
Tom Chirico from VH1 and Natalie Ponte from Facebook hosted the Social Fandom and Engagement session. In this session, they discussed how to engage best with the audience and how integrated campaigns can work across various platforms to engage the audience. During the session, Tom Chirico said, “The only thing that we do more than check our phones is breathe and pump blood.” Because social media is becoming such a prominent platform, it is important to not only learn how to reach an audience, but how to get them involved. Both speakers were very lively, knowledgeable, and interacted well with the audience.
Following the second breakout session was an integrated marketing communications panel, a competition hosted by The Boston Red Sox, and lastly, the day ended with a career fair.
I had a great time attending my first Regional Conference. If you’ve never attended a conference with PRSSA, you should jump on the next opportunity that comes up! Not only is it a good way to spend time with other members from our chapter, but you also are able to connect with PRSSA members from other schools, hear speeches from noteworthy PR professionals, and overall gain a better understanding of the PR industry.
